SCMTP - SCM in Theory and Practice
A 1-day case based seminar

Overview
Fulfilling customer demands on a high service level is crucial for modern value chains. This requires the precise synchronization of purchases and inventories with sales and customer demands while minimizing costs. As the global division of work is still increasing in all industries to improve speed, process integration and customer satisfaction, there is a growing need for methods and skills in this core task of Supply Chain Management.
This course uses the Beer Game in order to get familiar with the challenges of demand forecasting and fulfilment in multi stage Supply Chains. Based on this simulation, several instruments will be introduced to manage demand/supply synchronization. The contents of the course includes supply chain processes and strategies, value of collaboration and streamlined information, as well as elementary methods for Supply Chain Management.

Lecturer
With a background as a physicist, Dr. André Köhler is specialised in the analysis and design of complex processes. Since 2000, he has worked in several global Supply Chain Management projects, starting at Fraunhofer Institute IML. In 2003, he joined Deutsche Post DHL as Chief Consultant in the project lead for SCM projects and since 2006 as Global Program Manger in the area of Global Business Services. Furthermore, he teaches Procurement&Inventory Management at Warwick Manufacturing Group, University of Warwick, UK.

SAIM - Selected Aspects of International Management
(Additional seminar - open to all students of the university.)

Overview:
This module is designed to provide students with a sound understanding of the mechanics of doing business abroad and familiarize them with unique problems, characteristics of organizations engaging in international business. Major themes addressed include the emerging New Economy, globalization, differences in the socio-economic, political and cultural environments of international business, foreign direct investments, regional economic integrations and/or blocs, methods of entering foreign markets, global strategy and global marketing. The module will consist of the usual lecture discussion format plus case discussions and business games.

Dr. Elif Okan, Dr. Senem Göl
Yeditepe University, Istanbul

Dr. Senem Göl is a lecturer at the Department of Business Administration at Yeditepe University, Istanbul, Turkey. She is also the academic program directing manager of Management Application and Research Center at Yeditepe University. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Marmara University, Istanbul in 1997, her Master of Business Administration from Nebraska University-Lincoln, USA, in December 1998 and her Ph.D. from Yeditepe University in Management Program, in 2008. In summer 2005, she had a short term internship at United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and worked for the Industry Promotion and Technology Department on Foresight Issues. Her current research focuses on foresight, project management, international business and gender issues.

Dr. Elif Yolbulan Okan received her Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Middle East Technical University, Ankara in 1995 and her Master of Marketing from University of Salford Manchester, U.K., in December 1996. Between 1997 and 2002, she worked as an account officer in Turkish Economy Bank and Osmanlı Bank. She is a lecturer at the Department of Business Administration at Yeditepe University, Istanbul, Turkey since 2002. She is also the business program directing manager of Management Application and Research Center at Yeditepe University. Her current research focuses on consumer behaviour, international marketing and IMC.

KBAR-II - Kulturelles Basiswissen für den Arabischen Raum (Teil II)
(Zusatzseminar - zugänglich für alle Studierenden der Hochschule)

Übersicht:
Im ersten Teil des Seminars stand vor allem die Hinführung der Studierenden zur arabischen Welt im Vordergrund. Dies erfolgte durch ein weitläufig abgestecktes Themenfeld, das sich einerseits mit Kultur, Land, Menschen und Unterschieden aus theoretischer Sicht befasste, diese jedoch andererseits auch anhand von Fallbeispielen erläuterte und verdeutlichte. Der zweite Teil des Seminars befasste sich vor allem mit der arabischen Kultur mit dem Ziel, Unterschiede zur deutschen Kultur aufzuzeigen.

Hr. Mostafa Abd Alla, geboren und aufgewachsen in Ägypten, abgeschlossenes Lehramt-Studium für Arabisch und andere Fächer in Ägypten, anschließend Abschluss als Diplom-Betriebswirt in Deutschland. Weiterbildung zum Dozenten für Deutsch als Fremdsprache am Goethe-Institut und an der Wiener Universität. Seit 1993 als Sprachdozent in Ägypten und seit 2006 als Arabischdozent und Coach für Interkulturelle Kommunikation (Fachrichtung Arabien) sowie Deutsch als Fremdsprache an der Universität Heidelberg und der Universität Kaiserslautern sowie an verschiedenen Instituten, Bildungsträgern und für Unternehmen tätig. Seit 2008 Leitung von interARAB (www.interarab.de) in Karlsruhe.

IDIM - Introduction to the Dynamics of Intercultural Management
(Additional seminar - open to all students of the university.)

About the course:
This seminar researched models to describe cultural differences and thus prepare the students to develop methods do deal with them in business and management.
The seminar also aimed at making students understand some basic methodological issues in order to comprehend research articles written on the subject of cross cultural management. The language of instruction was English.

Head of the Business Administration Department

Prof. Yahyagil teaches organizational behavior, especially on the subject of organizational culture, and on research methods.
He is responsible for the management of the academic courses for about 2000 students. Almost half of these students are undergraduates of the business school, the remaining half are MBA and doctorate students. The Business Administration Department has 37 full time lecturers, and around 25 part-time lecturers.

ICLS (2) - Introduction to the Chinese Language and Script
(Additional seminar - open to all students of the university.)
This seminar is a repetition of the ICLS seminar held in May 2009 with identical contents.

Course outline:

  • Introduction to the history of the Chinese script.
  • Differences between the Chinese scripts on Taiwan, in Hong Kong and in the People’s Republic of China.
  • Transliteration systems.
  • Self-Introduction and forms of politeness and courtsey.
  • Ordering food and drink.
  • Numbers, e. g. telephone numbers.
  • Essential grammar.

The seminar will be conducted by Eva I. Schmitt, M.A. in Chinese Studies and Southeast Asian Politics, M.I.M: Concentrations on international finance and management. Presently, Assistant Professor at INSEAD, Fontainebleau, France. E. Schmitt worked for a Sino-US Joint Venture on Taiwan and in the PR China. She is a member of the ‘expert pool’ of the German Foreign Office.

FDIE - Foreign Direct Investments in Europe
(Additional seminar - open to all students of the University)
This seminar dealt with different aspects companies are facing when they are planning to invest in Europe. The seminar was based on case study work and offered an overview on human resources issues, legal issues, EU countries and legislation, etc. It focused on non-European corporations investing in Europe.

Lecturer:
Dipl.-Kffr. Julia Hansch, MBA
. Having studied Business Administration at the University of Mannheim, J. Hansch obtained an MBA at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, USA.
J. Hansch worked several years for Bosch Rexroth AG in Germany and the US. As a Project Manager in Strategic Purchasing and Logistics, her main responsibilities were procurement logistics for the US, Central and South American plants. The lecturer is currently a research assistant and Ph.D. student at the chair of Human Resource Management at the University of Mannheim.

BTME 2009
The international Summer School  BTME 2009 - Business and Technology Management in Europe (www.btme2009.eu), an Intensive Programme of the EU, will take place as a joint project at the UCE Karlsruhe, the IUT Robert Schuman Université Strasbourg and the Liverpool Hope University in June/July 2009.

More than 60 students and lecturers from 7 nations will work in transnational teams.
The students and lecturers, who normally study and work at universities in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Turkey and the UK, will conduct field research and compare marketing strategies of defined companies in France, Germany and the UK.

CB - Crossing Borders: Activities of German Enterprises Abroad
(Additional seminar - open to all students of the university.)

This seminar researched the legal aspects for enterprises going abroad. For a better understanding, it included an overview of the German law. Topics:

  • Choice of legal form; corporate law, particularly limited liability company and limited company: formation and corporate governance; taxation. The German situation in comparison to the situation in Switzerland, the UK and the U. S.
  • Choice of a possible holding site
  • Influence of EU laws: freedom of settlement, capital flow and service; cross border corporate reorganizations.
Lecturer:
Lutz Kaiser, LL.M., Rechtsanwalt, Fachanwalt für Steuerrecht. The lecturer is an Attorney at Law and Certified Tax Lawyer. His studies at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg during 1982 - 1987 where followed by attending the LL.M. programme at the University of Florida in 1998. Since being admitted to the bar in 1992, he is a sole practitioner. His law firm is member of the international network of law firms ILF, where he serves on the board of directors. He specializes in consulting SME and entrepreneurs in corporate commercial and tax issues, particularly in cross border questions. Beside, he serves on a corporation’s supervisory board and a non profit organisation’s directors’ board and is educating junior lawyers (Rechtsreferendare) within the trainee programme organized by the Rechtsanwaltskammer Freiburg.

IBI - International Business Insights (additional seminar)
Knowledge and the ability to apply it have always made a difference in work results. Having the right knowledge for the job you do and the times you live in leads to success and satisfaction. In today’s intensely competitive business environment, whether in borderless “bricks and mortar” or virtual marketplaces, the awareness of and capacity to apply certain international business insights and skills are crucial.
In Feburary 2009, the BA Karlsruhe - University of Cooperative Education offered a one-week international seminar to improve the participants' abilities to work effectively in the global marketplace. Topics covered:

  • The Historical Background and present Trends of the Global Marketplace
  • Tips on the Use of English in (German) Business
  • Steps towards Inter-cultural Competence
  • Social Networking for Work
  • An Update on Foreign Markets (in particular BRICs, USA and Eastern Europe)
The seminar was held by Dr. Kai Holschuh. Born and raised in the US, Dr. Holschuh worked for Mitsubishi, the World Bank and US Peace Corps in Latin America and Daimler-Benz in Germany before completing an MBA at Indiana University. From 1991 to 2000 he was responsible for the Sales and Marketing Divisions at Bertelsmann, Grupo Planeta and Call Center Alliance in Spain, and from 2000 to the present works as freelance consultant and trainer in customer contact and organizational communication for international firms, including Credit Suisse, Böhringer-Ingelheim and Syngenta. His PhD is in Leadership and Organizational Communication from ESADE, Barcelona.

MCCD - Management of Cross Cultural Differences (additional seminar)
An additional seminar in Intercultural Management was given by Prof. Dr. Rune Gulev, Primorska University, Faculty of Management Koper (www.fm-kp.si), Slovenia, in English at the UCE Karlsruhe during a week in October 2008.
The seminar introduced the participants to the current culture discourse and seeked to develop intercultural competence. It integrated cultural awareness into traditional business disciplines through a mix of lectures, discussions and case studies focusing on management, organization and communication. It aimed at developing the participants' own cultural skills to better tackle the multicultural business environment we face today by learning how to build on cultural differences and how to increase the effectiveness of multicultural companies.
German students and guest students from several countries attended the class and received a certificate valued 6 credits (ECTS) after successful completion.
